Sink Stopper Not Sealing

Inspect the rubber seal on the bottom of the stopper head.

But sink stoppers fail. This is a repair you can do yourself. A sink stopper mechanism isn t difficult to understand. Lift the stopper out of the drain.

Clear the stopper and rocker arm of hair and debris. 1 shows the threads from the clicker assembly. Check the rubber seal for damage and if necessary replace it. If the drain stopper is not moving or closing check the adjustable link.

Putty installation when you are installing a sink drain and decide to use plumber s putty you must wrap the putty around the sink s drain opening before you install the drain body. A seal made with plumber s putty may fail down the road if the putty becomes brittle and it cracks apart allowing water to pass through the seal. Reinstall the stopper and rocker arm. It moves the stopper in the opposite direction to the lift rod.

When you push or pull on the lift rod it activates a lever the extends through the drain tailpiece. A pivot rod that connects to the back of the drain pipe a perforated strap a clevis and a screw that locks the strap onto the stopper rod. The lever hooks onto the stopper through a hole or hook on the bottom of a long plastic flange that s attached to the stopper.

If a sink won t hold water look up behind the sink with a flashlight if needed to identify the following parts. If it s still in good condition you can reuse it. Make sure the flange is tightly. It s easy to fix a bathroom sink drain plug that s leaking.

Remove the old seal and slip on a new one if needed. Simply remove the plunger clean and if necessary replace. Start with the stopper on the clicker mechanism and make sure it is tightened down all the way. A sink stopper with a push pull rod control at the faucet is a great modern convenience.
